How do I join Welcome Waggers?

All Welcome Waggers must be members of the national organization the Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD, formerly Therapy Dogs Inc.).  Dogs must be at least one year of age to be tested and observed.

The process begins with a test done by one of our Tester/Observers in your area. To arrange this or make a preliminary visit during one of our activities, please contact Cammie Bella (see the 'Contact us' page). Cammie can also send you a detailed letter describing the steps you will take. Your dog should be on a leash no longer than 4' and should wear an ATD approved collar.  The test includes a handling portion which tests your dog’s basic good manners and your handling skills.  If you and your dog pass, you move to the next step of interacting with residents or strangers on three supervised visits to assisted living homes or similar establishments.  You can find details of the test, the  Application Form, and the Release of Claims form on the ATD web site.  You should bring to the test these forms and copies of your dog's proof of rabies vaccination and proof of a negative fecal exam done within the last 12 months (signed & dated by your veterinarian or clinic). When you've passed the test you will send the documentation to ATD, along with your dues.  Once confirmed, you'll pay your Welcome Wagger dues and be ready to start making visits.
