Becoming a Pet Therapy Volunteer at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, Corvallis

A subgroup of Welcome Waggers provides volunteer teams for Pet Therapy at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center (GSRMC) in Corvallis, at the Hospital, Cancer Center, and  Mental Health Unit.
There are a number of requirements for teams wishing to participate in this program. Some are the application and training requirements set up by the GSRMC itself for all volunteers, and some are our internal Welcome Waggers requirements.
If you are interested in Pet Therapy at the GSRMC you must first complete the hospital volunteer application and training program.  You must also be a
registered member of Welcome Waggers (and therefore of the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, ATD), which includes passing the regular behavior/obedience screening with your dog and observing the normal visiting requirements.

For GSRMC visiting, dogs must also pass a special temperament screening  done by one of our Tester/Observers.  For further information please email us (details are on the 'Contact us' page of this site.)

What do therapy dogs do at the hospital?

Many patients enjoy petting the Therapy Dogs and telling us about their own pets.  Families visiting patients also enjoy the enthusiasm of the dogs.  Some teams visit the Cancer Center where they meet patients waiting for chemotherapy, and  teams may also choose to visit the Mental Health Center.
